PROJECT
Together with three other students, I conducted an in-depth analysis and developed a strategic renewal plan for Denmark’s National Aquarium, Den Blå Planet.
The organisation has faced financial challenges following the pandemic and inflation, creating a need to increase visitor numbers.
The aim was to develop a long-term content and marketing strategy while modernising the aquarium’s digital presence. The goal was to expand its reach to a new, untapped target audience – young adults – while also increasing organic online visibility.
MY CONTRIBUTIONS
Collaborative work (four team members): We jointly analysed the organisation, developed a new mobile-first website design and created the campaign concept. We worked together throughout the UX process, from wireframes to mockups, with my contributions focusing on copywriting and layout. I also designed slides for our group presentations using Canva, Figma and Adobe Express.
Individual contributions: In addition to the collaborative work, I developed an SEO strategy featuring content pillars, subtopics and keywords, which resulted in a blog post about the hammerhead shark.
I also created initial campaign design concepts, one of which was selected by the group as the visual direction to develop further. Additionally, I designed campaign materials for TikTok, roll-up banners and a water bottle. I also created an Instagram post highlighting endangered species.

ANALYSIS
We used the Five Ws (Who, What, When, Where and Why) to understand the organisation’s purpose, identify its target audience and examine the channels it uses to communicate. The analysis revealed that the aquarium’s marketing primarily targets families with children. We therefore identified an untapped audience (young adults) as an opportunity for growth.
UX Design
We also conducted an analysis of the existing website, created low-fidelity wireframes in greyscale and developed a new design focused on simplifying the booking process and improving the overall user experience.

MY INItIAL CONCEPTS
We decided on the theme “Win a trip” for an advertising campaign where the winner gets to join one of the aquarium’s research expeditions.
We chose this approach because the company conducts research that the public rarely hears about, making the competition a great way to highlight it.
Afterwards, everyone in the group created their own visual drafts, and we then selected one of my concepts to develop further; here are two of the proposals I created:

PLASTIC
Plastic is one of the largest sources of marine pollution, and the bottle is intended as a prop for our content strategy: videos and posts discussing how plastic affects the ocean and the animals living there.
My Instagram post “Which will you save from extinction?” is built on the same idea. For TikTok, I created this carousel to spark curiosity.

TIK TOK
For TikTok, I created this carousel to spark curiosity.

PROCESS
We started with an in-person meeting where we went through everything we knew about The Blue Planet and answered the five Ws to understand the business, the target audience, and the communication goals. The analysis showed that the company primarily targets families with children, so we chose to reach an untapped demographic: young adults. Following this, we analyzed the website, created wireframes (everyone made their own, and we built upon one of them), and developed a new mobile design.
Once the “Win a trip” theme was set, I created several visual drafts and gathered feedback from the group to see which style evoked the best feel. The campaign was then expanded to include TikToks, roll-ups, and water bottles. In parallel, I developed an SEO strategy with content pillars, subtopics, and keywords to select a topic for a blog post.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
A creative process can be difficult to execute in a group setting because tastes differ so much. I learned that compromises are important and that bouncing ideas off each other is highly valuable for achieving a better end result. Since the project was never published, we didn’t get to see how the campaign performed, but the feedback I received during the workflow taught me a lot.
I also learned the difference between strategy and content: the SEO strategy dictates which topic and keywords should be prioritized, and the blog post is the final product that the strategy leads to. Furthermore, when working with AI-generated images, I realized that achieving high-enough quality can be very time-consuming, making it a trade-off that organizations need to carefully weigh.

Därefter skapade alla i gruppen sina egna visuella utkast.

Instagram-inlägget “Which will you save from extinction?” bygger på samma tanke.

ROLL UP
